This study is concerned with investigating the impact of corporate governance (CG) practices on improving transparency and accountability in higher education institutions in general and the Egyptian universities in particular. Three universities and institutions were selected for the purposes of the study. In order to achieve the study objectives, a questionnaire survey was designed and in-depth interviews and discussion focus-groups were conducted. A mixed approach of quantitative and qualitative methods was adopted in order to evaluate the CG policies and practices adopted by the selected universities. The findings indicate that CG is an effective anti-corruption tool and thus should be embedded into business strategies of institutions for preventing corruption opportunities. Awareness should be developed among employees to participate and sustain an environment that is instilled with CG practices. Although the study is limited to the Egyptian universities, results and implications of this study can be a useful reference to choose effective CG practices that can be successfully adopted and implemented in curbing and combatting corruption.
